Elementary Art Curriculum: Kindergarten – 6th Grade

Crossroads Christian School is committed to developing the whole child spiritually, academically, and creatively. The Fine Arts program is designed to strengthen each child’s overall development and build his self-esteem.
Elementary classes meet once a week. Students are involved in creating work that helps develop an understanding of the basic Elements of Art as they pertain to line, shape, color, texture, space, value, and form. Through the study of each element, they are exposed to many different styles and techniques. Typically each project will last one to two class periods to complete. Each project will be designed to teach a specific art element as well as teach the students to think creatively and to express ideas and emotions through their artwork. Using a variety of mediums we tap into their imagination. Media includes pencil, oil pastels, chalk pastels, watercolor, tempera, color pencil, clay, and some other three-dimensional materials.

Creative problem solving and design-based projects will also be part of our curriculum. The skills learned in art can help students in every aspect of their education as well as create a lifelong love and appreciation for the beauty of God’s creation and the talents he has given man. Creativity is a gift from God, and children are encouraged to explore the world of art and to develop their own art form or style. Students are exposed to the works of the masters throughout history and try their own hand at replicating the master’s style.

All elementary students have the opportunity to enter in at least two contests per year including the ACSI Art Festival. Our students have had great success at competition level.

Art Curriculum: Middle School and High School

Crossroads Christian School is committed to developing the whole child spiritually, academically and creatively. The Fine arts program is designed to strengthen each student’s overall development and build his self-esteem.

Using a variety of mediums we tap into each student’s imagination. Media includes pencil, oil pastels, chalk pastels, watercolor, acrylics, color pencil, clay, mixed media, and some other three-dimensional materials.  Creative problem solving and design-based projects will also be part of our curriculum. The skills learned in art can help students in every aspect of their education as well as create a lifelong love and appreciation for the beauty of God’s creation and the talents he has given man. Creativity is a gift from God, and students are encouraged to explore the world of art and to develop their own art form or style.

At the middle school level, students take a one-quarter art class that meets every day for one quarter. Building on the elements of art, students are challenged to create more advanced pieces utilizing a wide variety of techniques and methods. Our junior high students are exposed to more in-depth studies of different artists and their styles.

At the high school level, students are offered even more advanced creative opportunities as electives. Our Senior High students attend Art Classes several times a week. Students are required to complete assignments, develop an understanding of Art History, research artists’ techniques, and participate in the introduction of drawing, painting, mixed-media, and sculpture as they pertain to the Elements of Art and Principles of design.

The annual ACSI Art Festival is an opportunity for students to display and be involved in creative competition. CCS students have had great success at competition level.
